AI Plagiarism Detectors

A plagiarism detector checks whether a text copies existing sources. It shares the word "detector" with AI content detection — our main ranking — but it answers a different question, from different evidence.

Why this page exists

"AI detector" and "plagiarism detector" are routinely mixed up — in this market's search results, vendor pages, and school policies. A copied human essay and an original AI-generated text are opposite cases, and no single test covers both. Our main AI detection ledger scores tools on whether they can tell machine-generated text from human writing; plagiarism checking is a separate market with its own methods (source-matching, not authorship classification).

Where the two markets touch

The overlap is real but limited: Turnitin is the institutional plagiarism-checking incumbent and also sells AI detection; Originality.ai bundles a plagiarism checker with its AI detector. These vendor feature lists are vendor-stated. Bundling is not evidence: a vendor's plagiarism index says nothing about its AI-detection accuracy, which is why our ledger scores the AI-detection evidence only.

What plagiarism detection is evaluated on

These are criteria, not product claims — we have not verified plagiarism-checking vendors against them, and this page makes no accuracy claims about any product.

FAQ

Is a plagiarism detector the same as an AI detector?

No. A plagiarism detector checks whether a text copies existing sources. An AI detector estimates whether a text was generated by AI. A text can pass either check and fail the other, and the two questions need different evidence. This site ranks AI content detection only.

Do AI detectors also check plagiarism?

Some vendors sell both: Turnitin is the institutional plagiarism-checking incumbent, and Originality.ai bundles a plagiarism checker alongside its AI detection. Bundling does not make the two tests the same — our ledger scores the AI-detection evidence only, and vendor feature lists are vendor-stated.

The other senses of "AI detector": our AI content detection ledger and our AI image detection page.
